Teacher Lesson Plans

Lesson: Transparency Review

Possible Adaptations:

Goal of Lesson:
To teach students to investigate and distinguish between  primary and secondary sources when studying a work of literature

Materials Needed:
Computer Lab
Transparency sheets suitable for a printer (the package will contain information about which type to buy for your printer)
Color Ink in printer

Description of Activity:
1.  Explain the difference between primary and secondary sources to class.
2. Assign part 1 of the assignment.  (See attached student handout.)  This requires students to pick a work the class has studied (or will study during the semester) and do preliminary research on it.  The students should locate the following materials for the work they have chosen:
One historical or cultural fact related to the work.
Two quotations from two different critics.
Information from one primary source other than the text.
One illustration from the Internet related to your selection.  (NOT clip art!)
     Documentation of all sources.
3. On a scheduled day in the computer lab, have students come to class with their research.
4. Teach students how to use a text box and how to import a file from the Internet.  (see attached directions)
5. Instruct students to construct a word document that will be printed as a transparency for the class to see.  The transparency should contain all of the researched information, including documentation, and should be contained in one page.
6. Have students print word documents on transparency film loaded into printer.  Or, they may finish at home, save to a disk, and you can print it for them later (or give them the transparency and let them print it).
7. Allow students to present transparencies to class for review of the work(s).  This may also be a good way to introduce new works.
