Lesson: Medieval
Feast
Goal of Lesson: Accurate recreation
of a medieval feast in review of a medieval unit, complete with medieval
food, costumes, and typical feast customs and procedures.
Possible Adaptations:
-
May assign only the costume project and let
students present costumes in class.
-
May hold the feast in class one day rather than
holding a true medieval-style feast outside of class.
-
See extra credit opportunities at the bottom
of the Feast Guidelines.
-
Students may work individually or in groups
Materials Needed:
-
Medieval Feast guide
sheet and instructions
-
Pre-assigned date and location for a medieval
feast--see suggestions
-
Bibliography
of sources to aid in creative presentation of feast.
Description of Activity:
1. Assign costume design project to
students, using attached instructions.
2. Give students time (outside of
class) to complete their costumes. The suggested
amount of time
is several weeks.
3. Allow students to present costumes
in oral presentations in class.
4. Describe a typical medieval feast,
distributing the attached guidesheet.
Do this a
week or two before
the feast.
5. In small groups, have students
research and select recipes to prepare for the feast.
Have them turn
in a copy of the recipe, a shopping list, and a summary of who will do
what. They will then get together outside of class, cook the recipe,
and bring it to the feast. Alternatively, you could just
have them bring the dish to class one day.
6. Hold a medieval feast. For
a complete list of resources to help teachers (and students) prepare for
the feast, see the attached bibliography.
