Stephen O. Glosecki (Ph.D., California, 1980), Associate Professor of English, specializes in Anglo-Saxon art and culture, particularly Beowulf and the metrical charms. In 1989 he published Shamanism and Old English Poetry with Garland, who subsequently invited seven entries for the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Medieval Folklore. His essay "Movable Beasts: The Manifold Implications of Early Germanic Animal Imagery" appeared in Animals in the Middle Ages (Garland, 1996). Sometimes he illustrates his articles, which have appeared in such journals as ELN, The Journal of Ritual Studies, The Mankind Quarterly, and Medieval Perspectives. He is currently refining one paper on Anglo-Saxon queenship and another on the avunculate in Beowulf, the latter invited for Philological Quarterly. He has begun an alliterative translation of Beowulf, a work often covered in his graduate and undergraduate teaching of ancient and medieval epic, elegy, and romance. Recently he taught an honors seminar on Images of the Outlaw; currently he is leading juniors through Literature of the Vikings.
