Abstract
The writing classroom poses unique challenges for many instructors. Among
these, designing the classroom and syllabus, arranging peer work, and
grading papers are, perhaps, the most daunting. Determining whether to
design a student-centered or instructor-centered classroom will depend on
the instructor's educational philosophy as well as the anticipated student
body. The effectiveness of peer review/instruction rests not only with
appropriate instruction and assignments but also with the physical
arrangement, size, and demographics of the groups. The amount and types of
comments put on the students' work will be determined by the grading
methods used: analytical, holistic, or portfolio. These issues will form
the basis of the discussion and activities presented in the workshop
entitled The Writing Instructor: Managing the Madness.
